How to Remove a Picture Background in PowerPoint

Desktop PowerPoint can automatically mark a picture background, then let you draw over areas to keep or remove. PowerPoint for the web does not currently provide that command, so web users can create a transparent PNG before inserting the image.

Desktop PowerPoint and PowerPoint for the web

The two versions do not currently offer the same picture tools. Microsoft documents Remove Background in the desktop application and states that it is unavailable in PowerPoint for the web.

Remove the background in desktop PowerPoint

  1. Select the picture

Click the image in the slide. Open Picture Format > Remove Background. If the command is missing, confirm that a supported raster picture, rather than an SVG or another vector object, is selected.

  2. Read the magenta preview

PowerPoint colors the area it plans to remove magenta while leaving the intended foreground in its normal colors. Inspect small gaps and the full subject boundary before accepting it.

  3. Mark areas to keep or remove

Use Mark Areas to Keep over foreground that appears magenta, and Mark Areas to Remove over background that remains. Draw deliberate strokes through problem regions instead of outlining every pixel.

  4. Keep the changes

Choose Keep Changes when the preview is accurate, or Discard All Changes to start over. Check the result against the real slide theme, not only the editing canvas.

PowerPoint for the web: use a transparent PNG

Microsoft states that removing a picture background is not available in PowerPoint for the web. You can open the file in the desktop app, or remove the background before inserting the image.

  1. Remove the background in the browser tool

Select a JPG, PNG, or WebP image, review the automatic cutout, and use Keep or Remove points to correct it without uploading the source to our application server.

  2. Download the PNG

Save the result as PNG so alpha transparency is retained. A JPG download would replace transparency with a solid rectangular background.

  3. Insert the result into the slide

Upload the PNG to the web presentation, position it, and inspect its edges at presentation size. Keep the original file separately in case you need another cutout later.

Common PowerPoint problems

  • The Remove Background command can be unavailable for vector graphics such as SVG or AI files.
  • Magenta marks intended removal, so mark important magenta subject areas as Keep.
  • Soft shadows, transparent products, and hair may need more work than a high-contrast object.
  • Picture transparency changes the opacity of the whole image; it is not the same as removing its background.
