Quick Action, mask refinement, and export
Photoshop's fastest method creates the starting mask. Difficult edges still benefit from a careful layer-mask pass before the final export.

Run the Remove Background Quick Action

Select and unlock the image layer
Open the image, select the correct layer in the Layers panel, and make sure it is unlocked. The active layer determines which image the Quick Action processes.

Open the Discover panel
Choose the search icon in the workspace or Help > Photoshop Help. In Discover, open Browse > Quick Actions and choose Remove Background.

Apply and inspect the result
Photoshop isolates the subject and creates transparency or a masked layer. Compare fine edges, gaps, semi-transparent regions, and shadows with the original before exporting.
Refine the layer mask
A layer mask hides pixels without immediately deleting the original image data. Select the mask thumbnail and use the Brush tool to reveal or hide regions. Work at a moderate zoom and check both light and dark temporary backgrounds.
Use a smaller, harder brush for crisp product edges and a softer brush only where the source contains genuinely soft transitions. Hair, fur, glass, motion blur, and reflected colors often need additional selection-and-mask work beyond the one-click result.
- Paint on the mask, not the image pixels.
- Preserve the layered PSD before making destructive edits.
- Check disconnected details and holes inside the subject.
- Avoid over-smoothing edges that should remain sharp.
Export the transparent result

Hide unrelated background layers
Confirm the checkerboard is visible around the subject and that no solid fill or original background layer remains visible beneath it.

Export as PNG
Use a PNG export workflow with transparency enabled. Keep the PSD as the editable master and use the PNG as the flattened transparent asset.

Test the exported edge
Place the PNG over representative backgrounds from the final layout. Return to the layer mask if you see a fringe, clipped detail, or leftover background.
When a browser tool is enough
Use Photoshop when the cutout needs detailed masks, compositing, color decontamination, or other retouching. For a straightforward subject, the local browser tool can create a quick transparent PNG with point-based corrections and no account, then Photoshop can handle only the exceptional edge work.
